I am very lucky in that I don’t see many patients that have been admitted for burn injuries. This isn’t because there are not many injuries – there are hundreds of children admitted every year for burn injuries. It is because the doctors and nurses at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol treat the patients very quickly meaning they return home very quickly. It is better (especially for young children) to return home as soon as possible, not stay in hospital. Children then come in for check-ups every few days to keep track of the injury.
As for the worst burn injury case, I would say the worst injuries are those caused by very young children pouring tea on themselves without thinking. The burns are sometimes large and the child is obviously very scared. Luckily they are in the very best care and most recover amazingly quickly!
