Dark matter is a type of matter that scientists have thought up to make up sense of the universe. A problem they have found is that the weight of all the matter in the universe (i.e. planets and stars) does not come close to the weight the universe should be.
They think dark matter is another ‘thing’ that makes up for the missing weight – it is invisible and thought to make up around 85% of the matter in the universe!
Actually dark matter is thought to make up about 25% of the universe, 5% is what we called ordinary matter (stars and gas clouds mostly). The other 70% is an even more mysterious thing called dark energy.

Thanks! Love the explanation! I didn’t know that it takes up most of the Universe! 🙂
